Todoist Chrome extension not working? 10 fixes
Updated 24 September 2026 · by Alex Carter
Most problems with Todoist extensions in Chrome come from four causes: an expired sign-in, blocked cookies for todoist.com, another extension getting in the way, or an outdated browser. Start with the quick checks, then jump to the section for your extension: Todoist for Chrome (the official toolbar extension) or New Tab ist (Todoist in the new tab).
Quick checks (2 minutes)
- Open todoist.com in a normal tab. If the web app does not load or asks you to sign in, the problem is your session or Todoist itself, not the extension. Sign in there first, and check Todoist's status page if the web app is down.
- Update Chrome. Menu ⋮ › Help › About Google Chrome, then relaunch.
- Check the extension is on. Paste
chrome://extensionsin the address bar and make sure its toggle is blue.
Todoist for Chrome (official extension)
1. Sign out and back in
Open the extension, go to its settings and sign out, then sign in again. This fixes most "blank pop-up" and "tasks not updating" cases.
2. Allow cookies for todoist.com
If Chrome blocks cookies for Todoist, extensions cannot keep you signed in. Go to Settings › Privacy and security › Third-party cookies and add [*.]todoist.com under Allowed to use third-party cookies.
3. Turn off conflicting extensions
Ad blockers, privacy and script-blocking extensions can break the pop-up or the Gmail integration. Disable them one by one on chrome://extensions, or allow todoist.com in their settings.
4. Remove and reinstall
Remove the extension, restart Chrome and install it again from the Chrome Web Store. Your tasks are safe: they are stored in your Todoist account.
5. Gmail button missing?
The separate Todoist for Gmail extension was retired on June 30, 2026. Gmail support is now part of Todoist for Chrome, and there is also a Gmail add-on. See what replaces Todoist for Gmail.
New Tab ist (Todoist in the new tab)
6. The new tab does not show New Tab ist
Only one extension can control the new tab page. If you have Momentum, another dashboard or a search extension, disable it on chrome://extensions. When Chrome asks whether to keep the new tab page an extension set, choose to keep it.
7. The tab shows the Todoist sign-in page
Your Todoist session has expired. Open Settings › Account › Reconnect in the new tab and sign in again in the window that opens. If it keeps happening, allow cookies for [*.]todoist.com as described in fix 2.
8. The sign-in window closes or nothing happens
The sign-in opens in a small pop-up window. Complete the sign-in there, including any two-factor step, and wait until Todoist loads your tasks: the new tab detects it and closes the window. If you signed in with Google or Apple, finish that step in the same window.
9. No sound or notification when a focus session ends
Check that Chrome is allowed to show notifications in your system settings (on macOS: System Settings › Notifications › Google Chrome; on Windows: Settings › System › Notifications), and that Focus or Do Not Disturb mode is off.
10. Widgets or settings are gone
Settings and widgets sync with your Chrome profile. Check you are in the same Chrome profile (the avatar at the top right) and that Chrome sync is on. If you removed and reinstalled the extension, set your widgets again with Customize.

Questions
Why does my Todoist extension keep logging me out?
Usually because Chrome clears or blocks cookies for todoist.com. Allow [*.]todoist.com under Settings › Privacy and security › Third-party cookies, and check that no cleaning extension deletes cookies on exit.
Will reinstalling the extension delete my tasks?
No. Your tasks live in your Todoist account. Reinstalling only resets the extension's own settings.
Why did my new tab change back to Google?
Another extension or a Chrome prompt changed the new tab page. Disable other new tab extensions and choose to keep New Tab ist when Chrome asks.
