Momentum and New Tab ist both replace Chrome's new tab page, but they are built for different people. Momentum is an inspiration dashboard (photo, quote, focus of the day) that can sync Todoist tasks into its own to-do panel on the paid Plus plan. New Tab ist is built around Todoist: the full Todoist web app sits in the tab, next to a clock, a focus timer and widgets. If Todoist is where your work lives, New Tab ist gives you more of it; if you want a beautiful, multi-app dashboard, Momentum is the better fit.

How each one shows your Todoist tasks
This is the main difference. Momentum connects to your Todoist account and pulls your tasks into its own to-do panel, which you open from a corner of the screen. You can add, complete and reorder tasks there, and changes sync back to Todoist. It is convenient, but it is Momentum's interface, not Todoist's.
New Tab ist shows the Todoist web app itself in the tab. What you see is exactly what you see on todoist.com: your Today view with overdue tasks, natural-language quick add, priorities, labels, sections, sub-tasks, comments, and any project or filter you navigate to. Nothing is synced or copied, so there is nothing to get out of step.
Design and mood
Momentum is known for its full-screen landscape photos and motivational quotes; opening a tab feels like opening a window. New Tab ist goes the other way: a quiet, light or dark layout with one accent color, designed to get you back to your list. If the photo is what you love about Momentum, New Tab ist will feel plain. If you mainly used Momentum for its to-do list, it will feel more useful.
Focus features
Both include a Pomodoro-style timer. New Tab ist's focus timer sits next to your Todoist list, keeps running in the background, notifies you at the end of each session and counts your focus time and streak. It pairs with a daily intention widget and an optional one-minute breathing break.
Pricing
Momentum's Todoist integration is part of Momentum Plus, listed at $39.95 a year. New Tab ist costs €3.99 a month, or €39.99 once for lifetime access. Over two years or more, the lifetime plan costs less than a yearly subscription.
Privacy
With New Tab ist, you sign in on todoist.com inside the tab; the extension never receives your password or your tasks, and has no analytics. Momentum's integration connects your Todoist account to Momentum's service so it can sync your tasks. Both approaches are common; pick the one you are comfortable with.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Momentum if you love the photos and quotes, or if your tasks are spread across several apps.
- Choose New Tab ist if Todoist is your main tool and you want all of it, not a summary, in every new tab, with a focus timer next to it.
Switching is simple: Chrome only allows one new tab extension, so turn Momentum off in chrome://extensions and New Tab ist takes over.

Is there a free Momentum alternative for Todoist?
Without an extension you can pin a Todoist tab or open it at startup (see how). Momentum's own Todoist integration requires its paid Plus plan.
Can I import my Momentum settings?
No. The two extensions store settings separately. Setting up New Tab ist takes about two minutes.
Does New Tab ist have background photos?
No. It uses a calm light or dark layout with an accent color, so the focus stays on your tasks.
